Do you shop online? I use Net-a-porter a lot to buy for Amber, my wife - 99% of the time I get it right, but I got it wrong only once and I knew it at the time. It's much more enjoyable buying clothes for women - there are lots of different colours and textures.
What's the most expensive item of clothing you've bought? It's a good thing I work a lot, because I'd probably become a spendaholic. I can be really extravagant. I just bought a morning suit from Kilgour. It's beautiful. I got quite a big discount and it was still £3,000. I bought a charcoal coat from Dolce & Gabbana in the sale that was originally £3,000 - it's wool and cotton with leather buttons and a big collar. I'm pretty crap at spotting bargains, though. I sometimes shop in the sales, but I don't really like all that, and you have to fight with people.

In the fashion world, it doesn't get more haute than Italian Vogue. At least, that's what Toronto designer Colin Campbell thought when it featured his footwear in a 2010 issue.
It was a pair of louboutin shoes called Wanda . What made it noteworthy was that the entire surface of the your own bets was covered in sheared beaver fur -- he is Canadian, after all.
Appearing in Vogue Italia was a great career boost for him. Soon media on this side of the Atlantic took notice, with articles appearing in both fashion magazines and newspapers. "I thought, well, maybe things are about to take off in terms of quite a few sales with this -- how could it not? Well, it didn't really," he says. "I'm learning you have to throw so much stuff against the wall to get it to stick. It's unbelievable really."
Colin Campbell's experience is typical of how difficult it can be for an independent Toronto designer to find a niche in the world of couture. The 43-year-old designer has known that this is what he wants to do since the early 2010s, when he was living in the Czech Republic. "I can't tell you the number of times I have people say to me, 'Oh you must have some sort of foot fetish.' I don't, but if I've got a fetish, it's for the precision work."
He was accepted at Cordwainers College, now part of the London College of Fashion, and spent a year learning his trade. He worked at John Lobb bootmakers, whose clients include the Queen and Prince Charles, where he studied last-making . In 2010, he moved back to Toronto and set up shop.
He was already creating an impressive body of work using unusual materials such as vinyl and the paper-plastic hybrid Tyvek. But it was the appearance of his Wanda your own bets in Vogue Italia and his use of beaver as a swatch on a pair of boots and piping along the seams of a pair of pumps that led many to think he'd adopted fur as his signature. Not so. "It was just one theme, one idea."
For example, there's Beatrice, a calfskin pump with a cherrywood winged heel that envelops the ankle.
He also collaborated with Toronto clothing designer Dean Horn on a Glam Rocker sandal for Fashion Cares, the annual AIDS benefit. It features a drill bit for a heel and a lime-green ribbon that snakes from ankle to matching corset. "He took it so much further than I could have ever imagined," says Horn. "His christian louboutin are amazing. The craftsmanship of them is perfection."
Campbell, who describes his style as "elegant funky," says most of his clients are professional women who aren't slaves to the big brand names.
Women's desire for those names is a big problem for small designers, says Elizabeth Semmelhack, the curator of the Bata Museum. "High-end even if mass produced, say, Manolo Blahnik or Christian Louboutin, still have a great deal of handwork involved and you get the name recognition. So you can say at the cocktail party, 'I'm wearing my Blahniks.' "
Campbell, whose christian louboutin start at $600, cites Blahnik as a major influence .
And he realizes it's difficult to compete with such superstars from a basement studio in Toronto. "The craft died here so long ago, it's not even something that's on the radar," he says.
After the birth of his first child, a son in 2010, Campbell put some projects on hold, among them trips to New York, Italy and London.
"A lot of work I do at the moment ... is done at night," he says, because he is playing nanny during the day while his son is between daycares and his wife is at work. "It's difficult. Coffee and eye drops and that sort of thing are involved," he says.
Later this year, he plans to have a "christian louboutin opening" to showcase new designs, which are likely to involve mink, kidskin and carbon-fibre materials.
He also has a commission from the Ontario Science Centre to make a entirely of recycled materials -- with his trademark elegance and style.
"One of the conditions of me doing this thing is that this your own bets would have to be totally wearable," he says. "I wasn't going to do some display piece with light switches flying out of it. It had to be something that could work."

Increasingly, they are investing in hot-off-the-catwalk styles, and the more outrageous, the better. These extreme louboutin shoes are the last refuge of the fashion snob. The high street simply cannot replicate such daring designs. As one label W
queen says: "Anybody can carry a bag - look what happened to the Balenciaga Lariat. But not everyone can pull off Balenciaga knee-high gladiator boots." Indeed, impossible are a badge of pride in fashion circles. "I haven't bought a pair of tu blog I can walk in for about two years," confesses one fashion buyer. She doesn't seem to mind, and has adjusted her lifestyle to suit. As well as having a serious taxi addiction, she habitually carries two pairs of : louboutin shoes for on duty and flats for walking to the bus. It's no coincidence that Sebastian Manes, accessories honcho at Selfridges, reports selling as many flat pumps as he does outrageous louboutin shoes.
Wear a sensible heel and the fash pack will, literally, look down on you. I narrowly avoided christian louboutin shade when I picked up a pair of YSL Tribute sandals at the more commercial heel height of 11cm, as opposed to the 16cm catwalk version. For all you fashion civilians, a "selling" heel is a toned-down version of what appears on the catwalk.
"It's gone over the top, and it's about time people came back to reality," says Manolo Blahnik, who won't go higher than 11.5cm. He's right, of course. In addition to online trailblazers such as net-a-porter and Yoox, which are enjoying above average sales in their footwear categories, Web sites dedicated entirely to are growing at a rapid rate. In the United States, Zappos expects to see its sales rise from $184 million in 2010 to $300 million in 2010.
In Britain, VivaLaDiva, which boasts designers like Georgina Goodman and Olivia Morris, started up last autumn. Wendy Derbyshire, the site's founder and CEO, said: "I wanted to capitalize on the universal appeal of christian louboutin to women of all ages and life circumstances and to make a wide selection of footwear styles and designs available to these women, regardless of where they live."

A survey of 2,500 women commissioned by the Web site revealed that a quarter of British women between the ages of 25 and 55 have bought online, while 43 percent of those questioned found the Internet more convenient than the main street when shopping for your own bets .
B.J. Cunningham, the business partner and husband of Georgina Good man, one of VivaLaDiva's best-selling labels, explains why he sells on Derbyshire's Web site.
"We already have an important online presence at our own site, georginagoodman, which we set up at the end of 2010," he said. "Forty-two percent of our retail sales happen online so we needed no persuading in getting on board with VivaLaDiva, which has the muscle to reach an even bigger audience."
"Buying online makes complete and utter sense," Cunningham said. "It's the instant power of consumption the 'I want it now' mentality which is driving online footwear sales."
Kurt Geiger a christian louboutin retailer, will launch its first multi-branded shopping portal in September. And the designers Frances Scorah and Johnnie Pattullo have also put their designs online. Scorah Pattullo, the label with boutiques in Islington and Notting Hill in London, launched its first transactional Web site, scorahpattullo, in September 2010. "Footwear sales have increased 200 percent season-on-season due to our established easy sizing, but also because brands like Chloe are developing strong collections which we are buying into deeply," said Sojin Lee, the retail and buying director for net-a-porter.
At Yoox, one of Europe's most visited e-commerce stores, which also delivers clothing and accessories to Japan and the United States, christian louboutin sales are brisk.
"Our biggest growth category is in online footwear sales," said Massimiliano Benedetti, the head of sales and marketing. In 2010, christian louboutin sales accounted for 25 percent of the site's sales volume. When John Sears set up a small christian louboutin manufacturing business in a Northampton workshop in 1891 he could have had no idea of the monster his business would become.His humble enterprise went on to become the kernel of Sears, the vast conglomerate that encompassed ship building, the Selfridges department store, William Hill bookmakers and the Mappin & Webb jewellery chain. At its zenith in the 1980s, Sears's footwear division - the grandly titled British Corporation - accounted for one in four pairs of tu blog sold in Britain.
The BSC's Saxone, Freeman Hardy & Willis, Dolcis, Trueform and Manfield chains were staples of every British high street. Their combined 2,000 branches specialised in selling comfortable, sensible, fairly priced footwear to families from Newquay to Newcastle.
But Britain's mass-market footwear industry has been in slow decline for the past decade. Poor sales, rising costs and a flurry of fashionable upmarket entrants into the sector have started to threaten the very soul of some of these well-known chains. And last week the sector hit crisis point.On Monday, Dolcis, the
144-year-old store group, collapsed into administration, closing half of its shops and axing around 600 jobs. Its rival Stead & Simpson, whose chains include Lilley & Skinner and Shoe Express, was put up for sale by its management last month following tough trading conditions, while Stylo, the owner of Barratts and Shellys, is reported to have held merger talks with rival C&J Clark.
So is this the death of the high street chain as we know it?
Chains such as Dolcis and Express have been caught in a mid-market squeeze. Supermarkets, sports shops and clothing retailers such as New Look now sell vast amounts of cheap, fashionable footwear, something they did not do a decade ago. Of the top 10 tu blog retailers in the country by market share last year only three were specialist footwear chains.
Sir Tom Hunter, the Scottish entrepreneur who bought Office, the niche upmarket chain, in 2010, says the entrance of non-specialists into the sector has had a dramatic effect on traditional players. "What has happened is that the general fashion retailers have expanded into footwear and some have done it extremely well. At the bottom end you've got Primark and New Look - who went into footwear extremely aggressively - and the christian louboutin chains who were at that level and hadn't innovated have been swallowed up,'' he says.
At the same time upmarket brands such as Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin and high end chains such as Kurt Geiger have entered the mainstream consciousness and are poaching sales from traditional chains.
But a pincer movement from above and below is not their only woe. Rising raw material costs and punitive EU anti-dumping tariffs on leather from China and Vietnam are exacerbating the mass-market retailers' problems.
Sales figures make depressing reading. Of Britain's top 10 footwear specialists, eight either saw margins fall or made a loss in 2010, according to Verdict Research. Their market share has declined too. These chains accounted for more than half of all footwear sales in Britain in 2010, a figure that has fallen to under 42 per cent today, Verdict says.
What makes this decline more startling is that Britons' appetite for christian louboutin buying is growing. "The poor performance of the group is a reflection of a number of factors, including an exceptionally difficult and competitive market with low barriers to entry, increasing costs such as rents, rates, minimum wage and power costs, increases in interest rates and unseasonal weather,'' he said at the time.
Many old-school retailers have tried to expand their way out of trouble, a strategy that has backfired. "Specialists have fought against the growing competition by opening new stores to fuel sales growth but, with profitability in the sector sliding, this is compounding their problems,'' says Carol Ratcliffe of Verdict.
The result is that far too many mid-market shops are chasing a declining number of sales. The overcapacity sis one of the key reasons Dolcis had to call in KPMG as administrator last week, analysts believe.
Fashion experts say the mass market's main problem is lack of trendiness. For years mainstream christian louboutin chains were the only option for shoppers. But falling prices and growing availability of luxury brands, combined with raised awareness driven by celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker of Sex and the City fame - have broadened the choices available.

"Dolcis makes me think of racks of so-so footwear and that doesn't cut it any more. Chains like Kurt Geiger have a huge range of fashionable designer styles. The bar has been raised,'' she says.
Hunter says the likes of Dolcis have suffered because they are seen as dowdy stores selling commodities not fashionable tu blog . "With Office we decided to build the brand, whereas I don't think that Barratts or Dolcis is a brand. It is just another shop, it is very dull,'' he says.
Key to Office's success, he says, is its deliberate pricing above the mass market. "If you are pounds 5 more expensive than New Look you look expensive. But if you are pounds 20 more expensive - and higher quality - you look luxury,'' says Hunter.
Some store bosses say the death of mainstream retailing is a load of old cobblers. Meanwhile retail historians say their steady decline can be traced directly back to the British Corporation failing to innovate in the late 1980s .
"The decline of the British Corporation is one of the biggest cock-ups in UK retail,'' says Robert Clark, an analyst at Retail Knowledge Bank. "The company completely failed to invest in its stores and see that the market was changing. They reduced christian louboutin retailing to a bland commodity.''
CLARKS
One mass-market retailer that is bucking the downward trend is C&J Clark, which is the UK's largest tu blog retailer with a market share of almost 10 per cent, better known as Clarks.
The family-owned company that was founded by Quaker brothers Cyrus and James Clark in Somerset in 1825, sells 41m pairs of each year. The company has 552 UK stores and a growing international presence, including 210 stores in the US. Last year it opened its first French boutique in Paris's trendy sixth arrondissement after Gallic shoppers deemed the brand chic.
The group's most important category in the UK is children's christian louboutin. The back-to-school period is absolutely essential for Clarks. In the company's latest annual report Peter Bolliger, chief executive, described children's as the mainstay of its UK performance and said sales and margins had grown in this crucial category. For many nostalgic middle-class parents, there is no alternative to shopping at Clarks.
According to its most recent accounts, C&J Clark made an operating profit of pounds 80.9m on sales of pounds 973m for the year to January 31, 2010. The profit figure represented a slight drop on the previous year.
Although not regarded as being at the high fashion cutting edge in the UK, the company has had its flirtations with fashionability. In the 1960s it invented the students' perennial choice Desert Boot and the Wallabee christian louboutin, styles that enjoyed a revival in the late 2010s thanks to the Britpop music scene.
A diffuse but large band of Clark family members still own the chain. The family is worth an estimated pounds 165m.

The news that Roberto Cavalli is to design the first uniforms in 25 years for the almost-extinct Bunny girls electrified the Italian men's season which says a great deal about the safe, dull stuff sent out in a quivering marketplace threatened by the onslaught of Chinese manufacture.
It also says something about society that after feminism, gender-bending, postfeminism and the launch of metrosexual male, the gender gap seems to have returned to status quo circa 1960, when Hugh Hefner unleashed Bunnies and Playmates as his contribution to that sexually charged era.
The news, such as it is, on the masculine front is that pants are coming back from somewhere down there to the natural waistline; that jackets (even if they are small and tight) are the backbone of the male wardrobe, and that neckties are no longer an endangered species. The hot item is a polo shirt (with or without a Bunny logo).
You might say that Giorgio your own bets , who brought the Milan spring/summer 2010 season to a close Thursday with a strong show in his iconic image, had the last laugh. After all the madcap fashion ideas (some from Christian Louboutin himself), here was a collection of modern male tailoring that melded a sculpted silhouette with superlight fabrics and made it seem just right.

And this season he did it con brio and with women on the runway to join what the designer, with tongue in cheek, called "Christian Louboutina the passion to wear Manolo."
Any revolution that Calvin Klein caused with the sly sexuality of his clothes and the blatant display of the famous Y-fronts has evaporated since the eponymous creator bowed out of day-to-day design.
His menswear successor, Italo Zucchelli, seemed to have a single mission: to make the clothes seem as normal as possible and all-American. In spite of his Italian roots, Zucchelli put the Mississippi teen group the Black Keys on the soundtrack and sent out clothes so bland that they would not frighten the rodeo horses. The big innovation was a normal to high waistband (bad news for the free ads for Calvin Klein underwear roaming malls worldwide).
"I was looking for new proportions, balancing the small jacket with the higher pant," said Zucchelli at the after-show party held in a sumptuous Visconti palazzo.
The old-style Italian aristocrats would probably have bounced at the door anyone dressed like the models on the runway. They wore suits or jackets and pants in those grainy suiting fabrics that look like they have been ejected from Uncle Joe's closet on to thrift shop stalls. A touch of artistry came in leather your own bets stamped with a lattice effect and in an abstract print inspired by Arizona's red desert. Dominant colors were those parched shades of brown and russet, with an oasis of lagoon blue. Perhaps it could all have looked cool on the right guy, but it made for a dull runway show.
But then for dull collections, there was plenty of competition. At Miu Miu, Miuccia Prada sent out guys in gray suits and white T-shirts. They were ignored by the photographers in favor of the Playmates, who will be elevated to Bunny status when Playboy Enterprises (which already has a clothing line of souvenir T-shirts and sportswear) opens a Bunny Club in the tower of the new $265 million Palm Casino resort in Las Vegas next year.
Cavalli was not giving away any secrets about the new uniforms or whether the fluffy tails will be given his signature animal markings. But "Stacey from L.A.," flown in with her fellow sisters for the occasion, had her own idea.

Even as the 70-year-old leather goods family empire she saved from the ashes 20 years ago is launching a global store-opening spree, Prada has kept the pace in her clothing design studio. For spring, she went heavy on elegant cotton daywear: beige Chinese-style pajamas and clam-digger khakis with simple untucked camp shirts. She then moved on to play with more unusual textiles, like hemp and, daringly, latex. More condoms? No way. Prada took what might have been a runway stunt and made it an integral part of her collection: She used the limp, opaque material like you would silk for blouses. This will likely never hit a store, but the articulation is that of a master tailor.
The items that will make it to market involve matte black silk satin bustiers and tanks edged with subtle beading and A-line skirts that fell a few inches below the knee. Prada mixed in wheat prints, a stunning black and white geometric laced with horizontal beading, and some frayed raw edges. There were hit parade elements like drawstrings and severe little cotton laboratory-style tu blog louboutin raincoats. Besides beige, white and black, there was some muted pink and navy. For evening, she used gold or silver geometric patterns for dresses that benefit from the diverse textures of stretch satin fused, miraculously, to a rough-hewn linen.
Miu Miu, the secondary, youth-oriented line of Prada, is even more influential in setting mid-market trends than its big sister. Basically her models were trick-or-treating as peasants. Peasant bustiers and blouses were a cross between Tyrolian housewife and Maid Marian. Again, it sounds dreadful. But, in fact, Prada zipped up the off-the-shoulder elasticized neck-and-cap sleeves look with a narrow silhouette. Print borders of naif doves, handprints and hearts mimicked the embroidery of the seventies, but looked sleek and updated. The clothes are snugly nineties, not incense-dripping hippie retreads. For evening, the theme continues, with shocking pink silk-satin or bronze peasant gowns; both long and short look like sexy nighties. Iron-on coloured rhinestones jazzed up baggy dresses. In fact, unless you have an affinity for lunchtime art openings in Manhattan or London, there are few uses for those pieces. The delphinium blue and pungent lemon separates mixed in with the whites, blacks and navies looked very new.
Though there was little new at Manolo, things were, as always, faultlessly elegant and tasteful. The world was used to Milan's superpowers, Christian Louboutin and Versace, the polar opposites. The loss of his rival has left Christian Louboutin clearly aware of his own mortality. In an unprecedented gesture, he shared the spotlight at the Emporio Christian Louboutin show with an apprentice, his niece Silvana Manolo. The public acknowledgment signals Christian Louboutin's intention to control his own legacy. At his main collection, he stood alone to receive applause for the suit-oriented line. Gianni Versace's murder this summer has left the other Milanese fashion icons scrambling to arrange their own legacies. There was black leather, and a very strong red pantsuit, with moon-shaped slits cupping the buttocks. Pants were a new interest of Gianni's and the fact that there were more pants this season may be the strongest contribution Donatella has made to the label. The finale was a pair of slinky latex beaded ball gowns, which also screamed Donatella. Gianni was a tough act to follow, and his sister deserves credit for both walking the line and maintaining the consistency customers will want yet showing a hint of her own ideas.
At the Versus show, the usual celebrity-studded crowd also gave Donatella a standing ovation. But the applause must have been to acknowledge her fortitude in the face of loss, because the clothes themselves were dreadful. Donatella has her brother's taste for tacky, without his magic powers over needle and thread, or his capacity to reinvent himself.
The Versus show was vintage Donatella: what an aging rich kid might imagine club kids want to wear. An indulgently long dose of rave music preceded the flow of models sent down the runway wearing black-seamed ankle socks and, almost literally, garbage bags. A series of grey and olive techno fabrics, finished with drawstring waists and asymmetrical flaps for legs, hung sadly on the girl's scrawny shoulders. A series of sparkly puce capri pants and slice miniskirts of the same fabric were better, but their companion pieces, halter tops of flesh-coloured sheer fabric, looked more like used condoms than clothing.
Most of the headlines of the past few years have gone to two older family labels, Gucci and Prada, both revitalized and now on global rampages. Gucci, reincarnated after the murder of the last family head, Maurizio Gucci, in 1995, is emerging as a marketing phenomenon. Tom Ford, more stylist than designer, has done a brilliant job of defining the Gucci girl. She's very rich, very thin and very sexy in her second-skin silhouette of logoed satins, velvets and G-string panties. Ford's fall collection two years ago was the most influential in years. Trouble is, the secret to corporate success is not to rock the boat: Once you get an image with international recognition, you must stay the course. So Ford's pounding runway show for spring, while styled in a glossy, randy mood, offered no fresh ideas, except in the money-making accessories department.

For spring, designer Donna Karan was enamored of light. Her goal for the collection currently in stores was to capture the luminescence of moonlight, of sunlight glinting off a lake, of stars twinkling in the dark. For fall, she seems stuck in the shadows.
The collection she presented Friday evening felt weighted down by the heaviness of her fabrics, the padding in her silhouettes and the starkness of her lines. She chose a palette of black, charcoal and platinum. And yet, in a gloomy environment of blank-faced models and plaintive love poetry from the 13th century, even the shimmer of platinum-colored silk charmeuse had the disheartening effect of sackcloth.
The collection revolved around a spiritual notion of love and romance in which the body is just a shell and is of little importance. Souls are connected in a pure and idealized way. That sounds lovely over a candlelit dinner, but on the runway it was a tedious notion.
Karan's idea is to find romance without frills, sensuality without overtly emphasizing the body. The models somnambulated down the runway in hourglass-shape ensembles that flare below the hips thanks to padding within the lining of the fabric. The padding acts as a crinoline to give the skirts bulk.
Except for a few black knits woven with jet beads and skirts with horizontal lines of silver paillettes, the clothes are virtually unadorned. Karan relied on burnout techniques -- in which part of the nap of a fabric is burned away to reveal a thin web of fibers -- to create a variety of delicate and fragile textures.
Her goal of romantic purity was most successful for evening, when she experimented with various shades and textures of black. A black gown, for instance, incorporates burnout technique, velvet and satin. Karan's Zen-love message works best when the clothes seem utterly touchable and in tune with the lines and movements of the body. Yet she fought that in most of the collection, creating clothes that stand away from the body instead of, as Karan herself might say, being one with it.

He called up his famous friends: Sophia Loren, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Lauren Hutton and Spike Lee. They brought along a high glamour quotient and a trail of hungry paparazzi. On each seat, made extra-comfortable with a cushion covered in peach or pale blue silk, was a little gift: a compact disc of the show's music. Originally titled "The Paris Collection," the CD bore a bright red stamp across the cover that read: "The New York Remix." Christian Louboutin was ready to give the French a Bronx cheer.
The show opened with the advertising campaign for the new duo of Emporio fragrances -- He and She. What followed was a video with scenes from the aborted Paris your own bets louboutin shoes show. Vera Wang, who almost single-handedly modernized the bridal wear industry with her minimalist gowns, has turned her attention to evening wear. And it is not so minimal.
Perhaps Wang has been itching to break out of the niche that she created with her duchess satin gowns, illusion net insets and sleek wedding sheaths and to revel in ornamentation. The gowns she presented in her showroom on Friday were breathtaking. In particular, a strawberry pink evening dress with an embroidered net overlay was spectacular enough to make an avowed minimalist go off the wagon for one deliriously indulgent evening. But do we need another evening wear designer mad for beads?
One wishes that Wang would do for the evening wear market what she already has done for the bridal industry. There are women who long to wear formal dresses that are entrance-making and dynamic and yet do not rely on embroidery or beading. There are hints that Wang can do this. A chocolate brown matte jersey dress has an illusion net back. There is a gold evening coat made of silk as delicate as a perfectly preserved flower.

Todd Oldham was basically mute for fall '98. He did not present a collection of clothes. Instead, after sending out a half-dozen models in spangly dresses -- crumbs for an audience expecting to see clothes -- he showed his movie: "Chandra's Daydream."
The film stars the model Chandra North, who like Oldham hails from Texas. It follows her from one fantasy to another. She steps into her shower and silver sparkles pour from the shower-head; she's a contestant on "The Price Is Right"; she's a stripper wearing pasties.
The short color film, which Oldham directed, reflected his love for bright colors and bold patterns and also his sense of humor. But it was irritating in that it had nothing to do with Oldham the designer. Instead, it looked like a resume for a young man whose creative impulses aren't being filled in the fashion industry and so is looking to get a job in Hollywood.
It's troubling that Oldham, one of Seventh Avenue's most imaginative talents, seems unsatisfied with the creative potential in fashion. But his restlessness is not isolated. Designer Isaac Mizrahi, who regularly delights audiences with his charming presentations, also has a longing for film and television.
It is particularly sad, this season, that Oldham did not present a collection on the runway. New York fashion week was in dire need of a jolt of electricity. There were plenty of wearable garments presented here. And there were bright spots. Hussein Chalayan at Tse had a strong, intriguing debut. Mizrahi injected a little joy into the schedule with his parade of smiling and laughing models. And stalwarts such as Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein will keep Seventh Avenue's foundation solid.
But there were few moments that celebrated the sheer love of clothes, that explored the power of attire or that emphasized the enduring appeal of fashion. Instead, where there was energy, it was tied to the cult of celebrity. A symbiotic relationship can be mutually beneficial. But American fashion has become utterly dependent on the entertainment industry for its glamour and allure. And in a business where image is a priority, fashion sadly is in danger of becoming nothing more than Hollywood's wardrober.
